Herbal Education, Research, and Business Services

Welcome to HERBS by Sarah, provider of herbal education, research, and business services. Whether you’re looking for a speaker on herbs for your club or study group, classes on cooking with herbs, help finding hard-to-locate herbal products, advice on planning an herb garden, or have other herbal requests, HERBS by Sarah can fill your needs.

I am Sarah Liberta, a retired English professor, author, and editor who chose to reinvent myself as a culinary herbalist and turn my favorite hobby into a home-based business. Having experienced firsthand the transformative power of herbs, I enjoy teaching others to grow and use fresh herbs in their cooking (and many other aspects of their lives). I created and ran a popular series of culinary garden seminars for Chef John Folse’s White Oak Plantation. For many years, I’ve written columns for Louisiana Cookin’ and The Essential Herbal magazines and contributed to numerous cookbooks and other publications. I’ve edited cookbooks for chefs and edited the translation (from French) of the first book on gardening in Louisiana for LSU Press.

I’m currently working on two book projects: a collection of my Louisiana Cookin’ herbs columns, and a cookbook/survival guide for people with limited mobility, another subject with which I am well acquainted as a result of childhood polio and, more recently, post-polio syndrome.

A recent award I received by me was the 2017 Helen de Conway Little Medal of Honor in the Baton Rouge Unit of the Southeast District of the Herb Society of America.

As a lifelong educator, I can’t stop teaching. Read on for my newest project.

Schedule for 2016

Although the recent flooding and consequent relocation of OLLI Lagniappe Chapter classes for this fall presented serious logistical problems and caused me to cancel my original plans to teach for OLLI, I am happy to announce a revised schedule for another location that I can readily access.

Beginning in October, I will return to Red Stick Spice Company, now comfortably settled in their beautiful new shop at 660 Jefferson Highway, for a series of monthly classes in the fully equipped kitchen classroom.

I look forward to continuing our herbal journeys with you. Hopefully, OLLI will return to Broadmoor in the spring, and I’ll be teaching for both programs.

The new schedule is below. Class space is limited. For further details and to register, go to https://www.redstickspice.com/collections/cooking-classes/products/herb-classes-with-sarah-liberta
